My hot, sweaty Valentine's Day...
…was mostly due to an Army fitness test. Baby. As good as that was, playing Beethoven’s Egmont Overture with some pretty great musicians (not to mention great people in general!) was also very rewarding. After a fairly torrid 2011, things are looking up in the green machine.

Rolled up sheets of paper, smaller sticks and unadorned hands are all shown in pictures from this period. The large staff was responsible for the death of Jean-Baptiste Lully, who injured his foot with one while...

Amidst all this, on the back of yesterday’s interview my new teaching job was formally confirmed. Counting my blessings, etc. It’s a wonderful thing to realise that even after five incredible...

And now, dressed in our finery (for Timsenson bought two Hugo Boss suits for the price of one today), we’re off to spend the evening at the Schönbrunn Palace. Europe is pretty good!

During the Nazi occupation of Prague, there was an ambitious and aspiring SS officer. This officer had received orders to remove the statue of the Jew, Felix Mendelssohn, from the roof of the Prague concert hall. The problem, however, was that the roof was filled with numerous statues of renowned composers, none of which were mentioned by name. Therefore, he had to figure out which statue was...

Robert Manne's mea culpa
‘For its part, the left has been unwilling to concede that the Pacific Solution succeeded in deterring the boats. Between 1999 and late 2001, 12,176 asylum seekers arrived by boat. In the years of the Pacific Solution - 2002 to 2008 - 449 arrived. Since its abandonment, 14,008 asylum seekers have reached Australian shores. The left’s unwillingness to acknowledge the obvious has been of...
